About
Grant bought his first camera in 1958, at age 11, from the photographer Charles Arnhold. From that moment on, he was hooked. Photographers were the heros of the modern world; They were the pioneers, the men of action, the new artists! They were painting images with light! They were incredible, and Grant wanted to be one of them. Grant caught back up with Charles again in 1966 while he was on the Yearbook staff at Georgetown. That was where he also met noted Los Gatos architectural photograper, Peter Carter, who has become a great friend, and, like Charles, a mentor. After several years of college in the midwest, Grant was offered a chance to go to Portugal to train with Charles for six weeks. During his training, Charles encouraged Grant to join the U.S. Navy to become a naval photographer. The U.S. Naval School of Photography in Pensacola, Florida was one of the best schools in the world, and Grant was able to get there after two tours in Viet Nam as a photographer aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. America. Grant was also trained as a cinematographer, and soon found himself back in Washington, D.C. at the Naval Photo Center winding film, performing quality control, and mixing chemicals for days on end. He even got to share an apartment with Charles, who had, himself, become the youngest photographer for the Washington Daily News, covering the White House.Grant soon returned to London and found himself at the forefront of the video revolution as an operations engineer specialized in film to tape transfer for Ad agencies, the B.B.C and I.T.V. long before home video became a domestic reality. Still photography became more of a passionate hobby for a while. After 13 years, Grant returned to San jose to work with Charles at his Studio in San Jose, photographing sports and events for Branham, Leigh, Menlo Atherton, Saratoga, and Castilea Girl’s school. During that time, they also specialised as event and wedding photographers for eight years. After that, Grant spent a season with Arthur Mintz as a Color Printer in Saratoga, and also worked as a studio manager for two years at American Family Photographers.Grant's parallel interest in professional therapy led him to become a certified, licensed massage therapist in 1992 and, together with a few colleagues, he founded the chair massage company www.themassagezone.biz which has now given over 150,000 chair massage sessions in the bay area. Grant has taught workshops in chair massage for two years, and pioneered hot stone massage in the Bay Area. Grant also worked as a therapist for the County of Santa Clara Employee Wellness Department for 17 years, and has developed an original style of massage, blending native american ceremonial teachings with traditional massage techniques to create what is now known as ceremonial massage.Photography still remains Grant's true passion. Whereas his massage work allows him to reach and bless those around him, his photography allows him to leave a legacy for the world that comes after him."I hope to be more than just your photographer. I hope to be your photographer, your friend, and your personal artist." - Grant Atwell This year Grant has become the official photographer of Jazz on the Plazz in Los Gatos. Come see him every Wednesday this summer in the Los Gatos Town Plaza.
"I really believe there are things nobody would see if I didn't photograph them.” -Diane Arbus
